Our Confidence, Shipwreck on Bonaire by Cathy Salisbury

Our Confidence was a 60 foot wooden fishing boat from Denmark. During World War 2, it transported refugees. The ship then moved to the island of Saint Maarten in the Caribbean where it was an inter-island freighter and brought aid to victims of Hurricane Luis in 1995.
In 2003 Our Confidence, unexpectedly sank in front of Harbourvillage Marina in 60 feet of water. The boat began to sink while tied in its slip in the marina. "After trying unsuccessfully to contact authorities, I made the decision to tow the boat out to deeper water,” said Harbourvillage Marina Manager Carlos Rodriguez. Our Confidence was towed out of the marina until it began to be weighed down by the water filled hull. The ropes were cut free and the boat descended to its current resting place.

For the first 5 years of its existence, Our Confidence was a spectacular shipwreck. Upright and intact and full of marine life. The wreck was home to goliath groupers, angelfish, moray eels, barracudas and schools of snappers and jacks. We have had much fun free-diving on this wreck, visiting it easily from the boat or shore.

Since that time, the worms have taken their toll and most of the wooden structure is gone.
